The Table of Contents customization window in Word offers a comprehensive control options for users who require exact customization over the layout and design of their document’s table of contents. While the standard Word TOC is functional, many researchers demand a customized layout to align with institutional templates.
To launch the settings pane, ketik navigate to the References tab on the Ribbon, then choose Table of Contents from the dropdown, and finally choose Customize Table of Contents from the available choices. This opens a configuration panel featuring a range of customizable settings.

The most common choice is the dotted line, which enhances visual flow, but you can also disable leaders for a minimalist look or a solid bar for a more formal presentation. This feature is highly recommended when preparing documents for hard copy distribution, where uniform design elements improves navigation.
The dialog also offers an page number toggle. Deselecting the option hides all page references from the table, which may be preferred for screen-based reviews. If you keep pagination enabled, you can further set their placement using the Alignment selector, offering choices such as left. For power users, the Customize Styles provides direct access to the styles used for each level. One hidden gem is the Use hyperlinks instead of page numbers option. When enabled, clicking any entry in the table of contents jumps instantly to the referenced heading. This is highly beneficial in digital PDFs, where navigation speed enhances interactive functionality. However, if you’re preparing a document for printing, you may want to uncheck it to maintain clean print aesthetics.
Finally, remember that any adjustments applied in the TOC settings window are applied only to the current instance. To refresh the TOC, simply select the TOC, then Choose Update Option, and Apply Full Update. If you’ve modified the underlying heading styles, make sure to reapply the settings to maintain consistency.
