Performing a basic engine compression test is a reliable technique to assess the health of your engine’s internal components. This test helps you verify if the pistons, rings, valves, or head gasket are working properly. Inconsistent compression across cylinders can point to mechanical failure that might lead to diminished acceleration, vibration, or total engine seizure.


When preparing, make sure the engine is at normal operating temperature. A warm engine gives consistent data because all parts are thermally expanded to factory specs. Turn off the engine and remove the key and disconnect the fuel pump relay or fuse to avoid accidental fuel flow. You should also unplug the ignition system to stop the engine from starting accidentally.


Next, remove all the spark plugs. Note the position of each plug relative to its cylinder so you can reinsert them accurately. Use a specialized spark plug tool and ratchet to safely unscrew them. Never allow objects to enter the cylinder bores.

If a cylinder’s reading is abnormally low, you can do a wet test to help identify the faulty component. Pour roughly one teaspoon of motor oil into the low cylinder through the spark plug hole. Then repeat the compression test. If the reading goes up significantly, the problem is likely damaged piston seals. If there’s no change in pressure, the issue is probably with the valve seats or gasket.


Following the evaluation, put the plugs back in, reattach the fuel and spark systems, and run the engine and check for smooth performance. A cylinder compression check doesn’t require high-end gear—a simple gauge and common tools, but it gives you valuable insight into your engine’s condition. Frequent compression evaluations reduce long-term repair expenses.
